Elizabeth Mitchell was born on March 27, 1970 in Los Angeles, California. She is an American actress.

When Mitchell was one year old, her parents moved from Los Angeles to Dallas, Texas. Her two sisters were also born there. The parents were tax lawyers with their own company. In Dallas, Elizabeth Mitchell attended Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts. She studied acting at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and at the British American Drama Academy in London. Mitchell graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree.

Mitchell's first professional years were mainly characterized by stage performances in Great Britain and the USA.
