Alia Bhatt was born on March 15, 1993 in Mumbai. She is an Indian actress and singer of Hindi commercial film. Bhatt first appeared in a small role in the film Sangharsh (1999). As an adult, she made her film debut in Karan Johar's 2012 romance drama Student of the Year.
The Bhatt family has been in the film industry for several generations. Alia Bhatt is the daughter of film director Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan. From the first marriage, Mahesh Bhatt has two children, Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt, who are Alia's half-siblings. Alia has a big sister Shaheen (born 1988). Emraan Hashmi is her cousin and Mukesh Bhatt is her paternal uncle. Alia Bhatt has German roots: her grandmother Gertrude Hoelzer lives in Berlin and Bhatt feels emotionally connected to this city. Her grandfather fled to London during the Nazi era after serving two years in prison for publishing an underground newspaper. In April 2022, Alia Bhatt married actor Ranbir Kapoor.
Six-year-old Alia Bhatt starred in Sangharsh as the younger Preity Zinta in 1999 and made her adult debut in the romantic film Student of the Year (2012). The film became a commercial hit and garnered a ton of good reviews for the three cast members. In her next film Highway (2014), Alia Bhatt played the kidnapped Veera Tripathi, who developed Stockholm Syndrome. For her performance, she won the Stardust Award, the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and was nominated for two other categories. She also sang the song Sooha Saha in the film. She was praised by the critics, but the film made only an average profit.
She starred opposite Arjun Kapoor in 2 States (2014), based on the novel of the same name. Bhatt learned another language for her role. The film received critical acclaim, numerous awards and super hit status. Her third film of 2014 was Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, a romantic comedy starring her Student of the Year co-partner Varun Dhawan. It is a tribute film to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, which has been in cinemas since 1995.
