Biography of Lucy Liu

Lucy Alexis Liu was born on December 2, 1968 in Queens, New York City, New York. She is an American actress, voice actress and film director with Chinese roots in Taiwan.

Lucy Liu was born in Queens and grew up in Jackson Heights with her brother John Liu to her parents, who were Chinese immigrants from Taiwan, a biochemist and a civil engineer. In addition to English and Standard Chinese, Lucy Liu also speaks some Italian, Spanish and Japanese.

She lives in New York with her brother and his wife. At the end of August 2015, she gave birth to a son with the help of a surrogate mother.

Liu's acting career began in 1989 when she auditioned for a role in the University of Michigan's senior year production of Alice in Wonderland.

This career turned professional in 1991, when she starred in an episode of the US television series Beverly Hills, 90210 as Courtney. This was followed by supporting roles in television series such as LA Law, where she was seen as Mai Lin. In the US comedy series Coach, starring Craig T. Nelson and Jerry Van Dyke, she received the role of a work colleague in one episode. As a viewer, she was seen in the 1995 series Listen Who's Banging. In the same year she got a role in the fantasy television series Hercules and in the drama Bang.

In the hospital series Emergency Room Lucy Liu embodied the mother of a patient, Mei-Sun Loew in three episodes. In the episode Genesis of the action series Nash Bridges she was seen alongside Don Johnson. She played Kim Hsin in the episode Hell Money of the X-Files sci-fi series. In Cameron Crowe's sports drama Jerry Maguire, Lucy Liu starred in a scene with Ivana Miličević and Emily Procter. In the film Gridlock'd she received the supporting role of Cee-Cee. After that she had a guest appearance in the series NYPD Blue.

Liu starred alongside Harvey Keitel and Famke Janssen in 1997 thriller City of Industry. She then received the role of Amy Lee in the sitcom Pearl, which she embodied in 22 episodes. This made her better known to American audiences and she got bigger roles. The role of attorney Ling in the television series Ally McBeal helped her gain even more fame.

In 1999 she starred in five productions. She was seen as Pearl opposite Mel Gibson and Maria Bello in Payback, then as The Girl in the Toy Store in True Crime by and starring Clint Eastwood. Liu portrays Carmen Electra's girlfriend in the comedy film The Mating Habits of The Earthbound Human, and she stars as Brenda in Molly. In the comedy Play it to the Bone by Ron Shelton she embodies the character Lia.

In 2000, she appeared on screens in the film Shanghai Noon as Princess Pei Pei, alongside Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. That same year she starred opposite Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore as Alex Munday in Charlie's Angels.

She landed the lead role in Ballistic alongside Antonio Banderas in 2002. The following year she once again played one of the "Three Angels" in the sequel Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. She played the killer O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino's two-part film Kill Bill.

In 2004, she guest-starred as Lauren Beck on the American sitcom Joey for three consecutive episodes. The following year, Lucy embodies a blood dealer in the film drama 3 Needles. In the same year, she starred alongside Keira Knightley and Mickey Rourke in Domino. In Paul McGuigan's thriller Lucky # Slevin, Liu played the medical examiner Lindsey.

In the action comedy Code Name: The Cleaner, Liu portrayed an FBI agent and was involved in the project not only as an actress but also as a producer. In the series Ugly Betty! she had a guest appearance as Grace Chin in two episodes. In the action thriller Rise: Blood Hunter, she played a reporter who is bitten by a vampire and then becomes a vampire slayer. In the legal television series Dirty Sexy Money she played the attorney Nola Lyons in thirteen episodes from 2008 to 2009.

In film year 2008 she was seen in two comedies, Watching the Detectives as Violet and The Year of Getting to Know Us as Anne.

From 2012 to 2019 she played the role of Dr. Joan Watson in Elementary, an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. In the second season of the series, she made her directorial debut on the episode Paint It Black.
