Biography of Elisabeth Moss

Elisabeth Moss was born on July 24, 1982 in Los Angeles, California.

She is the daughter of musicians Ron and Linda Moss. She has a younger brother named Derek. She was educated in the Church of Scientology.

As a child she wanted to become a dancer and during adolescence she moved to New York to study dance at the School of American Ballet, after which she studied with Suzanne Farrell at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

She studied privately at her home, graduating in 1999 at the age of 16.

Her first notable role was in 1990, in the miniseries Lucky Chances.

Between 1992 and 1995 she played Cynthia Parks in the series Picket Fences; in 1993 she voiced Michelle in the animated film Once Upon a Forest and appeared in the remake of Gipsy, a television movie starring Bette Midler.

In 1995, she ticipated in the remake Escape to Witch Mountain, also for television.

In 1997, she starred in A Thousand Acres, alongside Jessica Lange and Michelle Pfeiffer. In 1999, she starred in Anywhere but Here, with Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman, and had a small part in Girl, Interrupted, a television film in which she starred with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.

From July 2007 to 2015, she played the role of Peggy Olson that made her the most famous secretary on television thanks to the acclaimed series Mad Men, for which she received six Golden Globe nominations.

In 2014, she received a Golden Globe, this time for her performance in the drama series Top of the Lake (2013-2017), and a Satellite Award for Best Actress in a miniseries or television movie.

In 2017, she acted in Mad to Be Normal, a biopic about Scottish psychiatrist Ronald David Laing, and in The Seagull, an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's play with the same title. In the same year, she began playing Offred in the series The Handmaid's Tale, based on the 1985 novel of the same title by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. The first three episodes premiered on April 26, 2017 and received very good reviews. She was again assigned the role of Robin Griffin for the second season of Top of the Lake.

On September 17, 2017, The Handmaid's Tale was chosen as the best drama series of the year at the 69th edition of the Television Industry Awards (EMI). Additionally, Elisabeth Moss won the award for best actress after seven nominations. In total, the drama took home eight awards.

Moss follows the practice of Scientology and declares herself a feminist.

On October 25, 2009, she married Fred Armisen, known for his appearances on Saturday Night Live. After separating, they divorced on May 13, 2011.
