Biography of Susan Sarandon
Susan Abigail Tomalin was born on October 4, 1946 in New York City. She is an American actress.
Susan Sarandon was born the eldest of nine children into a strictly Catholic family of Italo-Welsh descent. Sarandon's father Philip Tomalin was also active in show business as a singer in a big band. "I was forbidden to sing because I didn't have a nice voice. It created a music phobia in me," Sarandon told the Guardian.
After her school education she enrolled at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and occupied i.a. acting, English and military strategy. She earned the money for her studies through jobs as a secretary, cleaning lady and model. In fact, she had little interest in acting, but in 1964 she took part in a theatrical performance.
Through her husband, Sarandon came to film in 1970, both were cast in the film Joe. Chris failed and she was cast for a lead role. She then shot smaller parts for television while still a student in Washington, D.C. In 1975 she starred opposite Robert Redford in Daredevil Fliers and her first major success was in the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in which she played Janet Weiss.
In the drama Pretty Baby she convinced as the mother of a prostitute (portrayed by Brooke Shields). Shortly thereafter, she worked again with Louis Malle for Atlantic City, USA - and she was nominated for an Oscar for her role as a waitress. The two also became closer in private. In 1979 she divorced Chris Sarandon. In 1983, she starred opposite Catherine Deneuve in the horror film Desire before her final career breakthrough came with a starring role opposite Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer in the film The Witches of Eastwick.
In 1988, on her next film project, Annie's Men, she met Tim Robbins and began a relationship with him. Her involvement in the project came about at the instigation of Kevin Costner, Sarandon said in an interview with London's Guardian.
In 1991, Sarandon co-starred with Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise. She was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of a waitress turned delinquent. The following year she was nominated again after she had impressed as a caring mother in Lorenzo's Oil. Two years later, she received another Oscar nomination for her role as a boy's protective advocate in The Client, but lost the award to Jessica Lange. In the film Dead Man Walking, based on true events, directed by her partner Tim Robbins, with whom she combined a strong liberal, political and social commitment, she stood in front of the camera alongside Sean Penn and was awarded an Oscar for her role as a nun Helen Prejean Awarded.
In December 2009, Sarandon and Robbins announced their separation. Sarandon has two sons with Tim Robbins, one of whom is actor Miles Robbins. Her daughter Eva Amurri from a relationship with Italian director Franco Amurri is also an actress.
She has been nominated for an Oscar five times in her career. She finally won it in 1996 for Dead Man Walking (1995). She was also nominated nine times for a Golden Globe, most recently for the series Feud, in which she starred as Bette Davis.
In 2010, Sarandon was named FAO Goodwill Ambassador along with Celine Dion.
In 2011, Sarandon visited the Occupy Wall Street protest movement.
In a 2011 interview related to her role as Sister Helen Prejean in the film Dead Man Walking, Susan Sarandon described then-Pope Benedict XVI as as a Nazi ("The one before, not the Nazi we have right now"). Two days after the incident, the Anti-Defamation League asked her to apologize.
During the 2016 United States presidential election, she made public her support for Senator Bernie Sanders. After he failed to win the Democratic Party primary, she endorsed Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
She has been campaigning for the legalization of cannabis for years.
