Gemma Chan was born on November 29, 1982 in London, United Kingdom.
She is the daughter of an engineer who grew up in Hong Kong and a pharmacist who grew up in Greenock, Scotland, after her parents emigrated to Europe. She sister of Helen Chan.
She studied at Newstead Wood School for Girls in Orpington, London and then studied law at Worcester College, Oxford. After graduating, she turned down a job offer at the law firm Slaughter and May, to study acting at the Drama Center London.
Classically trained in violin and piano, she obtained the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Diploma in violin while she was still at school.
He played supporting roles in series like Project Catwalk (2006), Doctor Who (2009), Sherlock(2010), Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2011), Fresh Meat (2011), Bedlam (2012), True Love (2012), Death in Paradise (2013) or The Game (2014), among others.
From 2015 to 2018, she played the role of Anita / Mia, an android belonging to the Hawkins family in the British science fiction series Humans.

During 2021 she voiced the antagonist Namaari in Disney's animated film Raya and the Last Dragon and starred in Eternals, as Sersi, an empathetic Eternal with a strong connection to humans and Earth.
She was related to English comedian Jack Whitehall from 2011 to 2017.
She began another relationship with actor Dominic Cooper in 2018.
