Biography of Carrie Anne Moss
Carrie-Anne Moss was born on August 21, 1967, in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
She is the daughter of Barbara and Melvyn Moss. She has an older brother, Brooke.
At the age of eleven, she participated in the Vancouver children's musical theater and she toured Europe with the Magee High School Choir in her senior year.
She started out working as a waitress and a model. She was living in Barcelona, when she achieved her first appearance on television with the role of Tara in Dark Justice. She moved to Los Angeles to shoot the series, where she remained until 1993.
After enrolling at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, she starred in the Fox soap opera Models Inc. (1994–1995). She also starred in a short-lived Canadian-made series titled The Matrix which ran for thirteen episodes in 1993.
In the 1990s, she appeared in other series such as Street Justice (1991), Baywatch (1994), F/X:The Series (1996–1997), and Due South (1996), for which she earned a Gemini Award nomination. .
Her first films were from series B, like Flash-fire (1994), The Soft Kill (1994), Tough-guy (1994), Lethal Tender (1996), Sabotage (1996) or The Secret Life of Algernon Madge (1997).
Her big break came playing Trinity, the cyberpunk heroine in the sci-fi thriller The Matrix (1999). For this role she was required to perform extreme acrobatic actions and to achieve this she had to undergo a three-hour physical test during the casting. The film grossed over $460 million and was very well received by critics, being considered one of the most popular science fiction films. She was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Actress and an MTV Movie Award for her performance.
She later acted in Chocolat (2000) playing the role of Caroline Clairmont; Red Planet (2000) science fiction thriller; The Crew (2000) where she appeared as detective Olivia Neal and Memento (2000) playing a manipulative waitress. This movie became a hit and she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Moss played Trinity again in the sequels The Matrix Reloaded (2003) which received critical acclaim and box office success, and The Matrix Revolutions (2003), which received less than critical acclaim but also did well at the box office.
In 2005, she starred in the thriller Suspect Zero as FBI agent Fran Kulok, and was in the independent The Chumscrubber, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. She then appears in the comedy Fido (2006), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to favorable reviews. Moss released Snow Cake in the same year to positive reviews and earned a Genie Award nomination.
She followed up with the thriller Disturbia (2007), with the dramas Normal (2007) and Fireflies in the Garden (2008), which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival. She next starred in the direct-to-DVD romantic comedy Love Hurts (2009) and the thriller Unthinkable (2010), which was also released on DVD.
In 2012, she appears in Silent Hill: Revelation, a sequel to the 2006 horror film Silent Hill, which received very poor reviews. Additionally, she voiced the character of Aria in the video games Mass Effect 2 (2010) and Mass Effect 3 (2012).
She worked on four episodes of the series Chuck between 2011 and 2012, and had a recurring role on the series Vegas, which premiered in September 2012 and was canceled in 2013.
Moss then had the role of Penelope in the thriller Knife Fight (2012), which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and starred in the comedy Compulsion (2013). She also voiced Admiral Wells in the animated film The Clockwork Girl (2014).
She starred in the film Pompeii (2014), inspired by the eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed the city of Pompeii. In the same year she premiered the independent drama Elephant Song, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. In 2015, she followed up as a voice actress in the animated television movie Pirate's Passage.
She was Jeri Hogarth in Jessica Jones (2015-2019), a Netflix series with great critical success. She reprized this role in the second season finale of Daredevil (2016) and in Iron Fist (2017) and The Defenders. She also played Dr. Athena Morrow in the second season of the science fiction series Humans (2016).
Moss had a supporting role in the horror film The Bye Bye Man (2017), which despite negative reviews was a good box office.
She plays Trinity again in The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth installment of the saga, released on December 22, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max. It was scheduled to be released on May 21, 2021, but its release was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moss married in November 1999 with the American actor Steven Roy, whom she met in an acting class in Hollywood.
They had her first child, Owen Roy, in 2003, when she was 36 years old. Her second child, Jaden Roy, arrived in November 2005. And four years later, her third child, a girl named Frances Beatrice Roy, was born.
