Kangana Ranaut was born on March 23, 1987, Mandi district, India. She is an Indian actress who starred mainly in Hindi films. Laureate of Filmfare Awards and National Film Awards of India in various categories.
Kangana was born in Bhamla (now Surajpur), a small town in the Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, to a Rajput family. Her mother Asha is a teacher and her father Amardeep is a businessman. She also has an older sister, Rangoli, and a younger brother, Akshat. Her great-grandfather, Sarju Singh Ranaut was a member of the Legislative Assembly and her grandfather was an Indian Administrative Service officer. She grew up in a joint family in her ancestral haveli (mansion) in Bhambla and as she described her childhood as "simple and happy".
Kangana attended DAV School in Chandigarh City. She originally intended to become a doctor at the urging of her parents. However, an unsuccessful unit test in chemistry during her twelfth grade forced her to reconsider her career prospects and, despite preparing for the All India Preliminary Medical Test, she did not take the exam. Determined to find her "place and freedom", she moved to Delhi at the age of sixteen. Her decision not to continue her studies led to a constant feud with her parents, and her father refused to sponsor an endeavor that he considered futile.
After moving to Delhi, she wasn't sure which career to choose; at this time, Elite Modeling Agency, impressed by her appearance, invited her to become their model. Kangana decided to focus on acting and joined the Asmita Theatrep troupe, where she trained under theater director Arvind Gaur.
In 2004, producers Ramesh Sharma and Pahlaj Nilani announced that Kangana would make her debut in Deepak Shivdasani's I Love You Boss. The following year, her agent took her to producer/director Mahesh Bhatt's office, where she met producer Anurag Basu and auditioned for the lead role in Gangster: A Love Story. The film was a critical and commercial success and earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress Debut.
In 2007, the drama Life in a Metro was released, where she played Neha, a sly call center employee who has an affair with her married boss. Despite the failure at the box office, the film proved to be a profitable venture.
In 2008, Kangana made her Kollywood debut in the film Dhaam Dhoom. In the same year, she played drug-addicted supermodel Shonali Gujral in the film Fashion, starring Priyanka Chopra. The film became a "landmark" in her career, received commercial success and brought her several film awards in the category "Best Supporting Actress".
In 2013, she starred in the film Shootout at Wadala, starring John Abraham. The film was a commercial success. At the end of the same year, the film "Krrish 3" was released, where her character Kaya is a transforming mutant and henchman of the main villain.
In 2014, the film "Queen" was released, which became the main film in her career, where she acted not only as an actress, but also as a dialogue writer. The film and Kangana's performance received a lot of praise from critics. The actress has also received several Best Actress awards, including the Filmfare and National Film Awards.
In 2017, after a year-long hiatus, the film Rangoon was released, in which she played Julia, a 1940s Bollywood actress and stuntwoman. However, the film did not resonate with the audience. In the same year, the film Simran was released, where she played a Gujarati immigrant involved in criminal activities in America, which flopped at the box office.
In 2019, the film Manikarnika—The Queen of Jhansi, a biopic about Queen Jhansi, was released, in which she also tried herself as a director when the original director Krish left the project due to filming another film.
She practices vegetarianism and was listed as "India's hottest vegetarian" in a poll conducted byPETAin 2013.
