Emmanuelle Gray "Emmy" Rossum was born on September 12, 1986. She is an American singer, actress and director. She gained worldwide fame with the films The Day After Tomorrow and The Phantom of the Opera in 2004.
Emmy Rossum was born into a Jewish family in New York. She has no siblings. Her father is a banker and her mother is a photographer. When she was three years old, her parents divorced. After that, the relationship with his father was not very close. At the age of seven, on the recommendation of her kindergarten teacher, Rossum joined the Metropolitan Opera Children's Choir.
She went to the Spence School in Manhattan until, due to her frequent absences, the teachers gave her an ultimatum: either she would concentrate on her school career and put her career on the back burner, or she would have to leave the school. Rossum chose the latter and earned her high school degree online from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Her acting career began with television shows such as Law & Order (1997) and The Practice (2001). She also played young Audrey Hepburn in The Audrey Hepburn Story, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt (2000).
Since then, Rossum has appeared in various films, Songcatcher (2000), It Had to Be You (2000), Mystic River (2003) and The Day After Tomorrow (2004). In the latter, she played Jake Gyllenhaal's girlfriend.
Rossum celebrated her international breakthrough in December 2004 in the role of Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, a film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical of the same name. At the age of 17 she was filming alongside Gerard Butler and Patrick Wilson and recorded her vocal parts herself. This earned her a number of accolades, awards and a Golden Globe nomination.
In Poseidon, a film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, she played Kurt Russell's daughter.
After receiving several record deal and album offers as a result of her success with The Phantom of the Opera, Rossum recorded an album called Inside Out for Geffen Records for an extended period of time. It was released on October 23, 2007.
Since 2011 she can be seen alongside William H. Macy in the US adaptation of the British hit series Shameless. In August 2018 it was announced that she would be leaving the series after nine seasons. In March 2012, she was cast in the literary adaptation Beautiful Creatures.
At the end of January 2013 she released her second album Sentimental Journey. In 2014, Emmy Rossum not only played the caregiver of a woman suffering from ALS (portrayed by Hilary Swank) in You're not You, but can also be heard and seen singing in the end credits of the film.
In 2016, she made her directorial debut directing an episode of Shameless. The following year she directed the series again. In 2019 she filmed an episode of the series Modern Love.
Emmy Rossum lives in Manhattan with her mother. From 2004 to 2005, she was in a relationship with David Wildenstein, a member of the millionaire Wildenstein family. In February 2008, she married music producer Justin Siegel. The marriage lasted a year and a half, and Rossum filed for divorce in September 2009. Rossum is married to screenwriter and director Sam Esmail, whom she met on the set of his film Comet in 2013.
On May 24, 2021, the two became the parents of a daughter.
