Selena Marie Gomez was born on July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas. She is an American actress, singer, model, and voice actress.
Gomez was born on July 22, 1992, the only child ofItalian-AmericanAmanda Dawn Teefey (née Cornett) andMexicanRicardo Joel Gomez. She was raised with her mother in Grand Prairie, Texas after her parents divorced when she was five years old. Named after Tex-Mex singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, Gomez began acting at an early age.
Gomez's career began with a role in the television series Barney and Friends in 2002. Her breakthrough came with the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place, in which she played the role of protagonist Alex Russo. Gomez has had guest appearances on other series such as Hannah Montana, Zack & Cody on Board and Sonny Munroe and has appeared in notable films including Another Cinderella Story, Princess Protection Program, Suddenly Star and Spring Breakers.
Gomez began her music career in 2008 when she signed a record deal with Hollywood Records. To date, she has released three studio albums that have been certified Gold in several countries. She has also contributed to the soundtrack of various film and television productions as a singer, including Tinker Bell and Shake It Up.
The debut album, Kiss & Tell, has charted in the top ten in the US and in the top 20 in several other countries. The hit single, Naturally, was Gomez's first platinum-selling single.
In 2010, Gomez released his second studio album, A Year Without Rain. The album reached the top five on the US Billboard charts in its first week. The album had a successful start in many other countries.
A year later, Gomez released her third album, When the Sun Goes Down with the band The Scene. The first single from it, Who Says, sold around 3 million copies and was certified three times platinum in the US.
The accompanying album, Stars Dance, reached number one on the Billboard charts. In early June 2013, Gomez released his second solo single, Slow Down, which peaked at number 27 on the charts.
In late 2014 and early 2015, Selena Gomez co-recorded the song I Want You to Know with Zedd, which was released on February 23, 2015. The music video for the single was filmed in Los Angeles in early February. The song is Zedd's first single from his second solo album True Colors.
The second solo album Revival was released on October 9, 2015. The second single was Same Old Love, which also rose to number five in the single charts.
Her third studio album "Rare" was released on January 10, 2020. The album became her third album to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart.
In the fall of 2015, her autoimmune disease lupus erythematosus, diagnosed in 2013, became public knowledge. As a result of this illness, she suffereddepression and panic attacks, which forced Gomez to abandon her world tour in 2016. In September 2017, she announced that she had received akidney donationfrom her friend Francia Raisa.
Selena Gomez was in arelationshipwith Nick Jonas from 2008 to 2010 andJustin Bieberfrom 2010 to 2013, each with an interim separation. From late 2014 to May 2015, Gomez was in arelationshipwith Russian-German music producer and DJ Zedd. ShedatedCanadian singer The Weeknd from early 2017 to late October 2017. After their breakup, they datedJustin Bieberagain in late 2017 and early 2018, but the two broke up shortly thereafter.
