Julia Garner was born on February 1, 1994 in The Bronx, New York City. She is an American actress.
Garner was born in the Riverdale area of the Bronx. Her mother is a therapist and her father is an art teacher. She took acting classes to overcome her shyness. She had her first roles in various short films in 2010 and 2011 before she took part in an open casting for Sean Durkin's thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene and was hired for the role of Sarah. For this role, she was nominated along with the rest of the cast at the 2011 Gotham Awards for Best Ensemble Actor.
Her next role as Rachel, a 15-year-old pregnant Mormon, was in the film Electrick Children, co-starring with Rory Culkin and Liam Aiken. For this role, she won the Best Actress award at the Mumbai International Film Festival.
That same year, she appeared in a supporting role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the film adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's novel of the same name. Chase wrote her brief role in David Chase's directorial debut Not Fade Away (2012) specifically for Garner.
In 2013, she co-starred in the horror films We Are What We Are and The Final Exorcism: Part II. Also in 2013, she starred alongside Alex Wolff and Brendan Fraser in the comedy film HairBrained, which was produced by Brooklyn Film Festival 2013 premiered, starring as Shauna.
September 2014 saw the release of Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For, the sequel to 2005's Sin City, starring opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt as young stripper Marcy. Between 2015 and 2018, she had a supporting role in the series The Americans as a politician's lonely daughter who is being wooed by a Russian spy.
Since 2017, Garner has starred as a young criminal in the television series Ozark. She won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2019 and 2020 for her portrayal of Ruth Langmore.
She received critical acclaim for starring in 2019's The Assistant, as a New York film producer's assistant who is disregarded by her male colleagues and ends up witnessing sexual exploitation, but falls on deaf ears at a complaints office at her company. For this role, Garner was nominated for Best Actress at the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards.
Garner has been married to US musician Mark Foster since late 2019.
