Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995. She is a British singer and songwriter.
Dua Lipa's father Dukagjin is Kosovar Albanian, her mother Anesa is of Bosnian Albanian descent. When the war in Bosnia began in 1992 and the situation also worsened in Kosovo, the parents fled to London, where Lipa was born in 1995. Her grandmother came up with the idea of naming her Dua, which means love in Albanian. Lipa attended the renowned Sylvia Young Theater School. She had to interrupt her education there for a while because her parents went back to Kosovo for professional reasons in 2008, before she returned to London alone at the age of 15. She initially worked in clubs and as a model.
She eventually got in touch with Marlon Roudette, who encouraged her to record demos, which she released on SoundCloud starting in 2012. She caught the attention of Lana Del Rey executives and landed her a record deal with Universal Music. This enabled her to work with several American producers such as Emile Haynie and Rodney Jerkins for her debut album. Her first single New Love was released in summer 2015. Be the One followed in October, with which she was successful for the first time.
In collaboration with Jamaican rapper Sean Paul, the song No Lie was released in November 2016 and sold 1.5 million copies. In England, Lipa was included in the BBC's Sound of 2016 list at the turn of the year, which predicts the most promising newcomers for the following year.
The songs Hotter than Hell and Blow Your Mind (Mwah)followed as the third and fourth pre-single releases from their self-titled debut album. While the former was able to follow the success in European countries, she gained attention in North and South America for the first time with Blow Your Mind (Mwah), including a placement in the US singles charts. Room for 2 and Thinking 'Bout You were pre-released as promotional singles.
In April 2017, she released Lost in Your Light, a collaboration with American singer Miguel, as the final pre-single from her forthcoming debut album. Her self-titled studio album was released in June 2017. It has charted in over 25 countries, including 11 top 10 hits.
The sixth single from their debut album was released in June 2017. With New Rules, she was number one in the British charts for the first time and landed her second top 10 hit in Germany with the song within a year and her first as a solo artist. The single sold around seven million copies. Homesick was released in December 2017 as the seventh official single. This is a collaboration with British musician and Coldplay singer Chris Martin.
As the eighth and last official release from her debut studio album, Lipa released the song IDGAF in January 2018. The song has sold over a million with over 20 top ten hits. The music video was nominated for Best Choreography at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.
In April 2018 she released the single One Kiss, a collaboration with Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris.Electricity, which was released as the first single of the new project Silk City between Pentz and Ronson in September 2018.
In the same year, it was presented as a testimonial for the British car brand Jaguar's I-Pace electric car. As part of the campaign, she released the song Want To and made a request on the Jaguar website to create her own remix of the song. Shortly after the collaboration was announced, they set the world record for the most remixed song of all time.
In October 2018 she released a deluxe edition of her debut album Dua Lipa with the title suffix "Complete Edition", which contains the songs released since the last single release IDGAF. Also included was the song Kiss and Make Up, which was created in collaboration with the South Korean girl group Blackpink.
In January 2019, she released the track Swan Song, which is part of the soundtrack to the 2019 cyberpunk action film Alita: Battle Angel. In February, she won a Grammy in the Best New Artist category. In August, she announced the launch of the perfume Libre in collaboration with fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent.
In November 2019 she released the song Don't Start Now as the first single from her second studio album Future Nostalgia. Emily Warren, with whom she had collaborated on several occasions, was involved in the songwriting. The second single Physical was released in January 2020. The track reached the top 20 in most European countries and received a gold record in the USA. The third single Break My Heart was released in March 2020.
Future Nostalgia has reached the top 10 on the charts in over 30 countries, topping the charts in nine countries. In December 2020, the album was certified gold in the US. In March 2021, the album received an award for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards.
Dua Lipa's style of music can be classified mainly in the field of pop music. In addition to her own description as a "dark pop" singer, the genres of dance pop, synth pop, R&B, dream pop and alternative pop are often associated with the singer. She is also known for her "pronounced, hoarse, low pitched voice" and her "soulful" tone.
