Liv Tyler was born on July 1, 1977 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
She is the only daughter of Bebe Buell, model, singer and former Playboy playmate (miss November 1974), and Steven Tyler.
Her mother named her after Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann, after seeing Ullmann on the March 5, 1977 cover of TV Guide.
With ItalianGerman, Polish and English ancestry on her father's side and German on her mother's side. She has three step-siblings Mia Tyler (born 1978), Chelsea Anna Tallarico (1989), and Taj Monroe Tallarico (1992). Her maternal grandmother, Dorothea Johnson, was a founder of the Protocol School of Washington.
Without receiving classes, she began in the world of acting with appearances in the videos of her father's band.
She got to be known as an actress for her work in Stealing Beauty (1996).
She followed up with blockbuster movies like Armageddon and The Lord of the Rings (2001). A year later, she starred again as Arwen in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the second installment in the series. The film received good reviews, and in 2003, she appeared in the third and final installment in the series, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
She co-starred in the romantic comedy Jersey Girl (2004) with Ben Affleck and in 2005 she appeared in Steve Buscemi's independent drama Lonesome Jim, where she played a single mother. She later had a supporting role in Reign Over Me (2007).
In 2008, she is the lead in the horror thriller The Strangers, which was a box office hit. She appeared in The Incredible Hulk (2008), working alongside Edward Norton, which was also successful.
In 2011, she released the films Super and The Ledge, and in April of the same year, Rodale Publishing announced that Tyler and her grandmother Dorothea Johnson, an etiquette expert, had written a book called Modern Manners. It was put up for sale on October 29, 2013.
In 2014, she appeared in Space Station 76, a film directed by Jack Plotnick, and began appearing in the HBO television series, The Leftovers.
In 2017, she participated in the BBC series Gunpowder (2017), and in 2018, in the series Harlots. In this same year, she acted in the movie Wildling, also debuting as a producer. In 2019, she released the film Ad Astra.
She was a partner for four years with actor Joaquín Phoenix.
In 1998, she began dating British musician Royston Langdon of the band Spacehog. They became engaged in February 2001, and married in Barbados on March 25, 2003.
On December 14, 2004, she gave birth to Milo William Langdon. On May 8, 2008, the couple confirmed their amicable separation.
In September 2014, Tyler confirmed that she was pregnant with her second child, father David Gardner. On February 11, 2015, she had her second child, Sailor Gene Gardner, born six weeks early.
