Meg Ryan was born on November 19, 1961, in Fairfield, Connecticut (United States).
She is the daughter of Harry Hyra, a casting agent, and Susan Jordan Duggan, a former actress and teacher. She had two sisters, Dana and Annie, and a brother, Andrew. She has German, Irish, and Polish ancestry.
In 1974 she moved with her family to Bethel. Her parents divorced two years later.
She graduated from Saint Pius X Elementary School in Fairfield, where her mother was a sixth-grade teacher. At school she was confirmed in the Catholic religion by choosing the name Anne in her confirmation.
She studied Journalism at the University of New York and debuted with a small role in the cinema in 1981, when she was twenty years old, acting as the daughter of Candice Bergen in Rich and Famous by George Cukor.
She worked on several television series, including three years as Betsy Steward Montgomery on As the World Turns, but she didn't come to Hollywood attention until she appeared in Top Gun in 1986. A year later she met her future husband, Dennis Quaid, during the shooting of 'Innerspace'.
In 1989, Meg achieved international fame with the romantic comedy When Harry met Sally, with which she began her usual association with this genre. She is reminded of her famous scene when she performed a fake orgasm to a stunned Billy Cristal, in the classic restaurant scene. Her relationship with the romantic genre is consolidated in 1993 in Sleepless in Seattle.
She is a successful producer with films like French Kiss or You 've Got Mail. In 2003, In the Cut, a romantic crime-mystery comedy starring Meg Ryan and directed by Jane Campion gave vent to all sorts of comments due to the numerous sexually explicit scenes starring the normally demure actress.
In 2004 she stars in Against the Ropes. She later plays a supporting character In the Land of Women (2007) and is directed by Diane English in The Women (2008), for which she received her first Razzie nomination for Worst Actress.
In My Mom's New Boyfriend(2008) she works with the Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, the film was not released in the United States. Nor did the comedy The Deal, with William H. Macy, also fail to be distributed, being released directly to video in January 2009. In the same year she stars in Serious Moonlight. In 2015, she made her directorial debut with Ithaca, a film in which she also acted.
She married Dennis Quaid on February 14, 1991. They had a son, Jack Henry Quaid, on April 24, 1992. They divorced on July 16, 2001, after dating actor Russell Crowe, a co-star in the film Proof of Life (2000).
The actress added a new member to her family by adopting a 14-month-old Chinese girl named Daisy True in 2006.
Since 2010 she has been associated with rocker John Mellencamp, also known as John Cougar. On November 9, 2018, she announced her engagement to Mellencamp. On October 30, 2019, it was reported that they had ended.
