Biography of Mira Sorvino
She is the daughter of Lorraine Ruth Davis, an Alzheimer's therapist and former actress, and Paul Sorvino, an actor and film director. She has two brothers, Michael and Amanda.
Sorvino is of Italian descent on her father's side and was raised in Tenafly, New Jersey.
She was initially interested in oriental languages and graduated in Mandarin Chinese at Harvard before settling for a year in China, where she lived doing translations, teaching English and singing in European jazz orchestras.
She returned to her country because of the events in Tiananmen Square and she began her career in the world of cinema working as a script reader at Robert De Niro's production company TriBeca.
He landed some roles on television and in independent productions and auditioned for the cast of Don't Drink the Water, a version of Woody Allen's play directed by himself for television, but did not get any parts, although the casting director de Allen recovered it for Mighty Aphrodite.
She later worked on such films as Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, opposite Lisa Kudrow, and At First Sight, co-starring with Val Kilmer.
She was awarded an Emmy Award for her work in the small screen production of Norma Jean and Marilyn. She won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite.
She also starred in the films Mimic (1997), Lulu on the Bridge (1998), The Replacement Killers (1998), Summer of Sam (1999), and Like Dandelion Dust (2009). She received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her role in Norma Jean & Marilyn (1996) and a Golden Globe nomination for her role in Human Trafficking (2005).
She starred in Attack on Leningrad (2009), Multiple Sarcasms (2010), and Union Square (2012).
In 2014, she reappeared as Detective Betsy Brannigan in the final season of Psych, and in the fourth season of Falling Skies. In 2018, she played Amy in the psychological thriller Look Away.
Sorvino, 36, married actor Christopher Backus in a private ceremony at a courthouse in Santa Barbara, California, on June 11, 2004. The couple has four children: Mattea Angel (born 2004) and Lucia (2012) and sons Johnny Christopher King (2006) and Holden Paul Terry Backus (2009).
She was previously related to Quentin Tarantino and the French actor Olivier Martínez.
In 2017, she publicly stated about the sexual harassment she suffered from producer Harvey Weinstein. She said that her career may have been harmed after rejecting Weinstein.
