Rose Arianna McGowan was born on September 5, 1973 in Certaldo, Italy. She is an American actress, author and activist.

McGowan began her career with a few supporting roles, including Encino Man (1992). Her first success was with Gregg Araki's film The Doom Generation (1995), for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination. In the years that followed, she gained fame mainly through the filmsScream! (1996), Phantoms (1998) and Jawbreaker (1999) notoriety. Her acting breakthrough came in 2001 with the role of Paige Matthews in the TV series Charmed, which she held until the end of the series in 2006. In 2005, she played actress Ann-Margret in the television biopic Elvis.

In 2007, she starred in the first (Planet Terror) and a key role in the second (Death Proof) of the episodic film Grindhouse by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. In 2009 she had a recurring role on the series Nip/Tuck. In 2011, she played the witch Marique in Conan, the remake of the 1982 film of the same name. In 2013 and 2014 she appeared as a young Cora in two episodes of the series Once Upon a Time.

McGowan dated rock musician Marilyn Manson for three and a half years before splitting in 2001. They broke off the engagement because of the different lifestyles. From 2007 to 2009 she was in a relationship with director and producer Robert Rodriguez and engaged to him from autumn 2008 until their separation.

In October 2013 she married artist Davey Detail. They separated in May 2015 and have been divorced since November 2016.

In October 2017, she was among the first actresses, along with Ashley Judd, to make allegations of sexual harassment against producer Harvey Weinstein, sparking the so-called Weinstein scandal. Other allegations were u. a. raised by actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosanna Arquette and Angelina Jolie. Asia Argento and Lucia Evans accused him of rape.
