Alizée is the daughter of a businesswoman and a computer scientist, she grew up in Ajaccio. Her first name is derived from Alizé, the French term for the trade wind. She has a younger brother.

From an early age, Alizée was interested in dance, singing and acting. At the age of four, she took classical and Spanish dance classes, as well as jazz dance and tap dance classes. She wanted to take the chance to become a professional dancer but was accepted in the singing category. In the show, broadcast on February 25, 2000, she then performed with the title Ma Prière by the French popular singer Axelle Red and won.

The French singer Mylène Farmer and the French producer Laurent Boutonnat became aware of Alizée through the two television appearances. Farmer had just written the song Moi... Lolita, inspired by Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita, and was looking for a young singer to match the song. After test recordings, they then produced the song with Alizée.

On July 4, 2000, Moi...Lolita was released in France and immediately reached number two in the French charts. It became the first single to stay on the charts for 73 weeks. The song was also successful outside of France, for example it is the most successful non-English-language single in Great Britain to date.
