Olsen began acting when she was four years old and has appeared several times in Mary-Kate and Ashley's projects. As a child, she took acting classes and spent time in musical theater camp. Olsen almost quit acting in 2004 after media attention was drawn to Mary-Kate's eating disorder.
After graduating from Campbell Hall School in 2007, she studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company and attended the film school Tisch School of the Arts. Olsen graduated from NYU in January 2013.
In 2011 she took on the lead role in the horror film Silent House. In the same year she received good reviews for her portrayal of Martha in Martha Marcy May Marlene. For this role, she was nominated for several awards, including the Saturn Award and Satellite Award. She also received a Most Promising Performer award from the Chicago Film Critics Association. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association honored her and the other leading actors as Best Young Talent.
In Red Lights (2012) she starred alongside Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver. She has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2014 as the Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff. Olsen has been an atheist since she was 13 because she believes that religion should be a community and a place to pray, not something that should determine women's freedom. She is an ambassador for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics.
