Ariel Winter Workman was born on January 28, 1998 in Los Angeles, California. She is an American actress. She is best known for her starring role as Alex Dunphy on the ABC series Modern Family.

Winter is the daughter of Chrisoula (née Batista) and Glenn Workman. She is the sister of actors Shanelle Workman and Jimmy Workman. In October 2012, Winter was removed from her mother's care following allegations of abuse. She lived with her sister Shanelle for a time. A judge overturned her parents' guardianship.

Since 2007, she has lent her voice to Gretchen in the original version of the Disney Channel animated series Phineas and Ferb. From 2009 to 2020 she played the younger of the two daughters, Alex Dunphy, on the television series Modern Family. In 2009, she had a recurring role on the television series Emergency Room as Lucy Moore, daughter of Joanie Moore. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Feature Film at the 2012 Young Artist Awards for her starring role in the film The Chaperone. In 2012, she played the lead role Grace in Richard Bates Jr.'s horror film Excision.

She released the single Fallen in February 2010 and the single Banished in April 2010.

A month after her emancipation as a teenager at age 17, Winter had her breasts reduced from a 70F size to a 75D size. She reached the original size of her breasts at the age of 16. She stated that as a teenager, it would have been very difficult for her to find age-appropriate clothes for official occasions on the red carpet or for the beach without being negatively commented on as "precocious" or even ridiculed by the public or on the internet . Cyberbullying was partly responsible for her decision, but the main factors leading to the final decision were severe back and neck pain, medical advice, and discussions with Modern Family co-star Julie Bowen.
