Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1969 in Huntington, Long Island, New York.Mariah Carey was born the third child ofAfro-Venezuelantechnician Alfred Roy Carey andIrishopera singer and voice teacher Patricia Hickey.
She is an American pop, hip-hop and R&B singer, songwriter, producer and actress. With 19 number one hits in the USA, five Grammys and more than 200 million records sold, she is one of the most successful singers today.
At the World Music Awards in 2000, Mariah Carey received the Millennium Award for Best Selling Artist of the 1990s. Carey received the Chopard Diamond Award at the 2003 World Music Awards for selling over 100 million albums. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Mariah Carey is the most successful artist in the USA with around 69.5 million albums sold.
The US Nielsen SoundScan named Mariah Carey the most successful female artist in the US since the SoundScan era began in 1991.
With an estimated fortune of 520 million US dollars, she is one of the richest musicians in the world.
In March 1991, her debut album, Mariah Carey, topped the US album charts Billboard 200. Carey's performance at the 1991 Grammy Awards helped this success.
Mariah Carey became the top-grossing and best-selling album of 1991 in the United States, where it sold over 15 million copies in just one year.
On September 17, 1991, the second studio album Emotions was released worldwide. Critics rated the album even more positively than their debut.
Her third album, Music Box, was released worldwide on August 31 and went straight to the top of the US Billboard 200, but received mixed reviews.
The album became one of the most successful and best-selling of all time, selling over 32 million units.
The album Merry Christmas was released on November 1, 1994, and the first single from it, All I Want for Christmas Is You, followed the same day. The album became the best-selling Christmas album of all time, selling over 15 million units.
On October 3, 1995 their fourth LP Daydream was released. The album combines Music Box's pop music with contemporary R&B and hip-hop influences
In November 1998, in order to release an album the following year, she released a collection of their greatest hits to date, together with a few bonus tracks, under the title Number Ones.
In November 1999 new material was released entitled Rainbow. The album includes the singles Heartbreaker and Thank God I Found You, which also topped the charts. For the first time in Carey's musical career, however, the album was no longer assigned to the pop/soul genre, but to rhythm and blues.
Carey released nine albums from 1990 to 1999, which sold a total of 122 million copies.
Carey played a 1980s singer in the 2001 film Glitter. The film flopped and was nominated for the Golden Raspberry as the worst film of the year. While the film itself eluded that award, Carey won the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress of the Year.
Album "Charmbracelet", released in December 2002. That same year, she sang the American national anthem at Super Bowl XXXVI at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. A supporting role in the film Wisegirls followed.
When more than two years had passed since the last album, Carey's eighth studio album The Emancipation of Mimi was released. She was again successful with this record and has sold over 12 million copies including the singles in the USA. At the 48th Grammy Awards, she received three out of eight awards and was the most successful artist of the evening.
The single We Belong Together from the album The Emancipation Of Mimi spent 14 weeks in the charts in 2005. Don't Forget About Us was her 17th number one hit on the Billboard charts. Shake It Off peaked at #2 on the US charts for several weeks. As her single We Belong Together remained at No. 1, she became the first female artist to hold No. 1 and No. 2 on the Billboard chart in the same week.
In April 2008 their eleventh studio album E=MC² was released. According to Billboard magazine, E=MC² sold 1,221,000 copies in the US in 2008.
Her new work, Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, was released on October 2, 2009.
On May 27, 2014 her 14th album Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse was released. Since its sales fell far short of expectations, she parted ways with her longtime manager and producer Jermaine Dupri. In August 2015, Mariah Carey was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Caution is the fifteenth studio album of Mariah Carey. It was released on November 16, 2018, by Epic Records.
