Jennifer Jason Leigh
Biography of Jennifer Jason Leigh
Jennifer Jason Leigh was born on February 5, 1958, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
She is the daughter of writer Barbara Turner and actor Vic Morrow.
Her parents were Jews from Russian and Austrian families. They divorced when she was two years old. She changed her last name early in her career in honor of actor Jason Robards, a family friend of hers.
She had an older sister, Carrie Ann Morrow, and a half-sister, actress Mina Badie, on her mother's side, who acted alongside her in The Anniversary Party (2001), a film she directed. The director, Reza Badiyi, became her stepfather.
She worked on her first film at age nine in a non-text role in the film Death of a Stranger (1973).
At fourteen, she attended the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center on Loch Sheldrake in New York, acting workshops offered by Lee Strasberg, and landed a role in the film The Young Runaways (1978). She also appeared in an episode of the series Baretta, in another of The Waltons, and other television movies.
Jennifer owes her fame in Hollywood for taking all of her roles very seriously since she made her debut in 1979 with Buio Omega. To work in Georgia on her father's script, Jennifer lost weight, watched music documentaries and made friends with people in rehab.
For the big screen, she played a blind, deaf and mute rape victim in the film Eyes of a Stranger, for which she dropped out of school to star in it in 1981. The following year, she played a pregnant teenager in the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which served as his launch pad. She later acted as a virginal princess kidnapped and raped by mercenaries in Flesh + Blood (1985), an innocent waitress chased by a psychopath in The Hitcher (1986), and in Heart of Midnight (1989).
Among her performances, the moving Catherine Slooper of The Heiress stands out. She also works for television and writes scripts. She made her debut behind the camera with The anniversary party, a low-budget digital film released in 2001, written with British actor Alan Cumming. In the film appear among others, Kevin Kline and Gwyneth Paltrow.
She starred in Margotat the Wedding (2007), directed by Noah Baumbach, her husband at the time, and had a recurring role on the television series Weeds as Jill Price-Gray.
In 2015, she received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Daisy Domergue in Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in the sci-fi thriller film Morgan (2016), the horror film Amityville: The Awakening (2017), Annihilation (2018), and the drama White Boy Rick (2018). In 2019, she starred in two episodes of the final season of Showtime's The Affair.
In 1994 she received a Golden Globe for best actress for her performance in Mrs. Parker & The Vicious Circle.
In 1982, her father, Vic Morrow, was accidentally killed while filming Twilight Zone: The Movie. Leigh and her sister filed a lawsuit against Warner Brothers, John Landis, and Steven Spielberg. They reached an agreement a year later. The terms were not made public.
She met freelance writer-director Noah Baumbach in 2001 while performing on Broadway. They were married on September 2, 2005.
Her son, Rohmer Emmanuel, was born on March 17, 2010.
Jennifer Jason Leigh filed for divorce on November 15, 2010, in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce proceedings were finalized in September 2013.
