Biography of Uma Thurman

Uma Karuna Thurman was born on April 29, 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts. She is an American actress and former model.

Thurman began her professional career as a model, following her mother's example, before she was discovered for the big screen. One of her first known roles was as June Miller in Henry & June alongside Fred Ward.

With nominations for an Oscar and a Golden Globe, she got her international breakthrough in 1994 for the role of the self-destructive gangster bride Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's cult film Pulp Fiction. This was followed by less successful leading roles, such as in the future vision Gattaca, in the comic adaptation Batman & Robin (both 1997) and in a theatrical version of the British television series Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone (1998), which critics and audiences regarded as an accident.

In 2003, she received a Golden Globe for her role in the TV movie Hysterical Blindness, and made a comeback as an avenging bride as co-writer, again collaborating with Tarantino, on Kill Bill - Volume 1 and Volume 2.

In 2005, she starred in the comedy Prime. In the comedy My Super-Ex Girlfriendby director Ivan Reitman. In 2007, Thurman starred in the internet action short Mission Zero, directed by Kathryn Bigelow for Pirelli.

The 2010 film Motherhood starring her was a worldwide flop. In the 2018 horror film Down a Dark Hall, Thurman stars alongside actress Isabelle Fuhrman.

Thurman was married to actor Gary Oldman from 1990 to 1992. On May 1, 1998, she married actor Ethan Hawke, with whom she has a daughter (Maya Hawke, * 1998) and a son (* 2002). The marriage was divorced on July 20, 2004. In July 2012, Thurman and her partner Arpad Busson (b. 1963) became parents of a daughter. The couple separated in spring 2014. Thereafter, there were rumors that she was dating her longtime friend and supporter, director Quentin Tarantino, but she denied it.
